KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) continued with their cautious approach in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League (MJHL), beating Bandar Penawar SS Juniors 2-0 at the Bandar Penawar Hockey Stadium yesterday.
BJSS lead a group of three other teams in making a winning start to their league campaign. BPSS-Thunderbolt, Anderson and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) were the other teams in the top division to record their second win.
BPSS-Thunderbolt were 4-1 winners over Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) while Anderson survived a late scare to score a last-minute goal for a 3-2 win over the national women’s team in Ipoh.
At the Kuala Terengganu Hockey Stadium, newcomers UniKL thrashed MSS Kelantan 7-1.
BJSS, in their win over BPSS Juniors, scored a penalty-corner goal through Kavin Kartik in the 35th minute and Mohamed Redzhwan Jaafar sealed the win with a field attempt in the 58th minute.
BJSS coach S. Prakash said that the main objective was to collect full points.
“BPSS Juniors put up a good fight and I am glad that our players were able to stand their ground,” he said.
“We had the better of the chances and also more penalty corners today. The scoring rate was not good but we were more concerned about gaining three points.
“We have some work to do and we will get it done as we move along. There are tougher matches to come.”
At the Tun Razak Stadium in KL, heavy rain in the second half did not dampen the spirit of the BPSS-Thunderbolt team.
Mohamed Firhan Ashari scored a brace in the 57th and 59th minutes. Earlier, the Saari brothers, Fitri and Faisal, were on target in the 12th and 40th minutes respectively. MBPJ’s solitary goal was scored by Mohamed Rashid Baharom in the 28th minute.
The national women’s team were just three minutes from earning a draw against Anderson.
The Ipoh side took the lead with two quick strikes by forward Mohamed Soffian Kamaruddin in the 31st and 32nd minutes.
But the girls fought back and Siti Noor Amarina got the first goal in the 51st minute.
Then Fazila Silin equalised in the 67th minute off a penalty corner.
And Jasdev Singh converted a penalty corner to give Anderson full points.
In Kuala Terengganu, the MSS Kelantan team led with a 19th minute goal by Kamarul Azwan Abdul Rahman.
But a minute later, UniKL were back on level terms with a goal by Mohamed Sabri Mohamed. The forward went on to claim a hat-trick with goals in the 26th and 52nd minutes.
The other scorers for the university side were Mohamed Syamin (28th), Mohamed Aminuddin Abu (32nd), Dedi Ariyadi Jumaidi (44th) and Manraj Singh (50th).

BJSS coach S. Prakash said yesterday their opponents may be junior side but every match will count and they need to keep up their winning momentum.
“The BPSS Juniors have a quite a number of players from the national Under-16 squad and many of them have been in the side for the last three years.
“So we are going up against an experienced set of players and the match will be a tough one,” said Prakash.
He said the match with BPSS Juniors will be a good gauge of his team’s ability.
“For me this match will show where we stand in our title run and what to expect against the other title contenders. The problem with our first match is the many misses from our forwards.
“We have numerous chances that went to waste and we need to rectify it. I hope the forwards will get it right tomorrow (today).”
Besides the BJSS match, two other matches today will provide an insight into the front runners for the title this year.
The combine Bandar Penawar SS-Thunderbolt team will be up against Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) at the Tun Razak Stadium. MBPJ lost 0-2 to Anderson in their opening match.
BPSS-Thunderbolt won their opening match against their juniors and will be looking for another win today.
The other match to watch out for is the Anderson versus the national women’s team in Ipoh.
BPSS-Thunderbolt coach Wan Roslan Wan Rahman said their aim is not to drop any points in their bid to win the league title.

He opened the scoring in the 19th minute and added the second in the 40th minute of a rain-delayed match.

Mohd Nor Aqmal put UniKL ahead in the 26th minute with a field goal before Amir Farid Ahmad Fuzi scored a brace in the 27th and 34th minutes.
The national women’s team scored their consolation goal in the 53rd minute through Siti Noor Amarina off a penalty corner.
In another Division One match, title contenders Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt also got off to a winning start, thrashing their Juniors 5-1 at the Bandar Penawar Hockey Stadium.
Mohd Ammar Zahari (11th, 14th), Shahrusahadan Basri (45th), Mohd Amirol Aideed (55th) and Mohd Shaharil Saabab (59th) scored for BPSS-Thunderbolt.

The match also saw three other SMK Datuk Taha and two TBSS players receiving card warnings.
TBSS won the match 3-0.
In the other two Division Two matches, Penang Free School and Ipoh City Council drew 1-1 while debutants Sabah MSN hammered SMK Pengkalan Permatang 10-0.

JURULATIH hoki kelahiran Belanda, Roelant Oltmans (gambar) bakal tergolong antara pengendali asing menikmati gaji termahal di Malaysia iaitu AS$10,000 (sekitar RM34,000) jika menandatangani kontrak bimbing skuad kebangsaan.
Ketika ini, difahamkan, pengendali beregu badminton, Rexy Mainaky dan ketua jurulatih berbasikal, John Beasley, menerima gaji termahal, namun pelantikan mereka berdua dianggap berbaloi apabila berhasil menghadirkan pencapaian hebat atlit negara.
Sumber dalaman Persekutuan Hoki Malaysia (PHM), berkata Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) setuju menampung sekitar RM8,000 dengan bakinya perlu ditanggung sendiri PHM.
“Ia harga yang terpaksa dibayar PHM untuk menghadirkan pingat emas Sukan Asia 2010 di Guangzhou, China (November) bagi melayakkan Malaysia ke Sukan Olimpik London 2012.
“Beliau (Oltmans) akan ditawarkan kontrak dua tahun, namun jika gagal mencapai emas Sukan Asia, jumlah gajinya akan dinilai semula. Begitu juga dengan kepentingannya untuk terus membimbing skuad kebangsaan,” katanya.
Delegasi PHM akan berlepas ke venue Piala Dunia 2010, New Delhi, India, sekitar minggu depan bagi mendapatkan tandatangan Oltmans sebagai pengesahan jawatannya selaku ketua jurulatih negara. Ketika ini, dua pengendali tempatan, Stephen van Huizen dan Tai Beng Hai membimbing skuad kebangsaan, yang menang selesa, 4-0 ke atas kelab Korea Selatan, Seung Ju City Hall pada aksi persahabatan di Bukit Jalil, semalam.
Sekalipun terpaksa membayar harga mahal, Oltmans yang membantu Belanda menjuarai Sukan Olimpik, Piala Dunia dan Trofi Juara-Juara, mempertaruhkan jawatannya jika gagal menghadiahkan emas Sukan Asia.
“Beliau sedia meletak jawatan. Keyakinan itu sedikit melegakan PHM, kerana membuktikan kesungguhannya menyahut cabaran,” kata sumber.
Pengarah Cawangan Elit MSN, Ariffin Ghani, mengesahkan pihaknya setuju membayar RM8,000 seperti diputuskan dalam Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Kerja MSN- PHM di Bukit Jalil, kelmarin.
“Jumlah itu memang diperuntukkan sejak kedengaran desas-desus PHM akan melantik jurulatih asing. Bagi saya, langkah ini patut diambil kerana belum cuba belum tahu.
“Rexy dan Beasley berjaya melonjakkan reputasi Malaysia, mungkin selepas ini giliran hoki pula,” katanya.

PENGURUS skuad Projek 2013, Mirnawan Nawawi (gambar) mahu pemainnya mengekalkan tahap disiplin untuk mengikut strategi ketika berdepan kelab Korea Selatan, Seong Ju City Hall pada perlawanan kedua Kejohanan Persahabatan Empat Penjuru, hari ini.
Selepas tewas, 1-3 kepada Manheim pada aksi sulung, kelmarin, ujian di Stadium Hoki Tun Razak bakal menentukan nasib pasukannya sama ada layak ke final berdepan lawan lebih senior.
“Saya sedar pemain berdepan tugas berat menentang Seong Ju City Hall kerana keputusan tiga perlawanan persahabatan tidak memihak kami. “Namun, saya tegaskan bahawa peluang sentiasa ada jika pemain beraksi mengikut arahan.
“Sebenarnya, pemain mampu setidaknya seri menentang Manheim. Namun, mereka goyah selepas tidak mengikut arahan jurulatih (Muhammad Dharma Raj Abdullah) dan ia mengundang kekalahan itu,” katanya.
Tiga perlawanan persahabatan awal menentang Seong Ju City Hall menyaksikan kekalahan, 0-2, 1-2 dan 0-5.
Bagaimanapun, ia tidak melunturkan keyakinan bekas kapten kebangsaan era 1990-an itu kerana yakin anak buahnya mampu mengatasi kelebihan pengalaman, kepantasan dan kekuatan fizikal milik lawan.
“Di pentas antarabangsa, gabungan tiga aspek itu sentiasa memainkan peranan penting. Malah, ia lebih ketara memandangkan majoriti pemain skuad Projek 2013 berusia bawah 19 tahun.
“Namun, pemain boleh menafikan kelebihan itu jika mengerah kekuatan terbaik dan bermain bijak. Malah, kami memiliki kelebihan beraksi di tempat sendiri,” katanya. Perlawanan lain menyaksikan skuad senior kebangsaan berdepan Manheim di gelanggang sama.

KUALA LUMPUR: Nor Hizzat Su mantri will be the second Project 2013 squad player to feature in the Dutch Hockey League.
The 18-year-old Kuala Lumpur forward will join team-mate and midfielder Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim at the Hatem Club. Faeez was the first player from the Project squad to be invited to play in the Dutch League. He left for Holland last month.
Project 2013 squad coach K. Dharmaraj said that Hizzat and Faeez would play in 10 league matches in the next 10 weeks.
“Each Dutch club is allowed to hire two foreign players. Faeez and a South African forward were invited to feature in the Dutch League.
“However, the South African player’s hopes of playing in the league did not materialise because of visa problems,” said Dharmaraj.
“So, the Dutch club have invited Hizzat to replace the South African. Both Faeez and Hizzat will benefit from playing in the Dutch League,” said Dharmaraj.
Both Faeez and Hizzat played for UniKL-IBIL in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) last month.
For Dharmaraj, he wants to send at least three more of his Project squad players to play in Europe this year to gain experience.
“We want not only to qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup but also to put up a strong challenge in the Finals,” said Dharmaraj.
Hizzat, who featured in the Under-18 Asia Cup in Myanmar last November, said that he was delighted to get a chance to play in the Dutch League.
“This is the first time I am playing in a foreign league. My target is to score as many goals as possible in the 10 league matches,” said Hizzat.

NEW DELHI: Holland took a clear lead in Group A of the men’s hockey World Cup with a 3-1 win over New Zealand yesterday.
All four goals came in the first half after New Zealand captain Phillip Burrows had put his team ahead in the opening minute of the game.
Ronald Brouwer drew level immediately in the second minute, Taeke Taekema scored a penalty corner in the seventh, before Jeroen Hertzberger completed the tally in the 27th.
The Dutch moved to six points from two matches as defending champions Germany and Asia’s number one South Korea went to second place with four points each following their first wins in the tournament.
New Zealand, who had defeated Canada in their opening match, are on three points.
The Germans, seeking a hat-trick of World Cup titles, came back strongly after a 2-2 draw against the Koreans to trounce Canada 6-0.
It was their biggest World Cup win since the 7-0 romp over India in the 1978 edition in Argentina while playing as the West German team.

THE Malaysian Women's Hockey Federation (MWHF) hopes that the World Cup Qualifier will be played as scheduled in Chile although the country was hit by a devastating earthquake just days ago.
Malaysia are supposed to play in the Chile qualifier on April 24-May 2 which also involves the hosts, Australia, Ireland, Scotland and Trinidad and Tobago. "We are scheduled to depart for Chile on April 17 but with the current situation I am not sure if the tournament will be held there.
I have contacted the FIH (International Hockey Federation) regarding the matter and they are looking into it," said MWHF secretary S.

England defeated South Africa 6-4 in a high-scoring thriller, while Australia and Pakistan bagged their first points in the tournament after losing their opening matches.
Abdul Haseem scored once in each half as Pakistan, stung by the 1-4 defeat to arch-rivals India on Sunday, recovered to beat Olympic silver-medallists Spain 2-1.
Pre-tournament favourites Australia brushed aside the 2-3 loss to England as they swept aside India 5-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,000 at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The Kookaburras, watched from the stands by visiting Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith, ran up a 3-0 lead by the 26th minute and pumped in two more goals despite Jamie Dwyer missing a penalty stroke.

PEMAIN skuad Projek 2013, Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim muncul pemain termuda negara menyertai Liga Hoki Belanda apabila berlepas ke negara itu, awal pagi semalam untuk mewakili Hatem Hockey Club.
Penyerang kelahiran Klang, Selangor berusia 19 tahun itu mengakui tidak menyangka terpilih mewakili skuad divisyen kedua Liga Hoki Belanda, yang dianggap antara saingan terbaik dunia.
“Saya tidak menetapkan sebarang sasaran di Belanda, cuma mahu mempelajari seberapa banyak ilmu hoki Eropah bagi membantu skuad Projek 2013 menghadapi Piala Dunia 2013.
“Peluang ini mungkin hadir sekali seumur hidup dan saya perlu menggunakannya secara optimum kerana bukan semua pemain lain bernasib baik seperti saya,” katanya.
Penyerang utama skuad senior, Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil pernah beraksi di Belanda iaitu mewakili Hilversum Mix Hockey Club pada Oktober 2008, mengikuti jejak langkah pemain tengah kebangsaan, Jivan Mohan, yang beraksi dua bulan lebih awal.

England defeated South Africa 6-4 in a high-scoring thriller, while Australia and Pakistan bagged their first points in the tournament after losing their opening matches.
Abdul Haseem scored once in each half as Pakistan, stung by the 1-4 defeat to arch-rivals India on Sunday, recovered to beat Olympic silver medallists Spain 2-1.
Pre-tournament favourites Australia brushed aside the 2-3 loss to England as they swept aside India 5-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,000 at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The Kookaburras, watched from the stands by visiting Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith, ran up a 3-0 lead by the 26th minute and pumped in two more goals despite Jamie Dwyer missing a penalty stroke.
England emerged Group B leaders with six points from two matches, while Australia, India, Pakistan and Spain were lying in second spot with three points each.

BUKAN Roelant Oltmans saja buruan Persekutuan Hoki Malaysia (PHM), sebaliknya kunjungan delegasi badan induk itu ke New Delhi, India, 10 Mac ini turut diiringi misi memancing pengendali dari Australia dan New Zealand.
Malah, difahamkan pengendali dari Australia itu yang pernah membimbing skuad kebangsaan, sudah menyatakan persetujuan untuk kembali mencurahkan ilmu buat pasukan Malaysia yang menghuni ranking ke-15 Persekutuan Hoki Antarabangsa (FIH).
Timbalan Presiden PHM, Nur Azmi Ahmad, bagaimanapun berkata, keutamaan tetap diberikan kepada Oltmans jurulatih Belanda yang dilaporkan masih memiliki kontrak dengan kelab negara kelahirannya, Larensche Mixed Hockey Club.
“Antara tiga calon itu, Roelant menjadi keutamaan kerana beliau dilihat memiliki ciri-ciri diperlukan skuad kebangsaan selain sudah mengadakan rundingan awal dengan PHM.
“Sekalipun rundingan itu sekadar lisan, pada dasarnya kedua-dua pihak puas hati untuk menjalin kerjasama. Malah, perjumpaan di India lebih terarah untuk membin- cangkan butiran yang masih belum jelas terutama mengenai status beliau,” katanya.
Delegasi PHM bakal diketuai Presiden, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah dengan harapan menamatkan usaha melantik pengendali asing yang berlanjutan hampir setahun lalu.

Shivendra was handed the suspension by tournament director Ken Read for hitting Pakistan’s Fareed Ahmed above the eye in Sunday’s Group B clash between the Asian rivals.
Read penalised Irfan for wearing an unapproved glove and knee pad to defend the first penalty corner in the same match, a statement from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) said.
Shivendra will miss India’s key Group B matches against Australia, Spain and England, but will be available for the last game against South Africa.
Irfan will sit out of Pakistan’s match against Spain today.
Shivendra, who scored a goal in India’s em phatic 4-1 win on Monday, was charged under a level 2 offence of FIH’s code of conduct which deals with physical assault without causing serious injury.

USAHA mendapatkan khidmat jurulatih kelahiran Belanda, Roelant Oltmans mengundang keraguan sama ada ia kesilapan Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) atau salah maklumat Persekutuan Hoki Malaysia (PHM).
Selepas laman web Larensche Mixed Hockey Club, kelab bimbingan Oltmans di Belanda, mengeluarkan kenyataan jurulatih itu dikekalkan untuk tempoh dua musim lagi, Ketua Pengarah MSN, Datuk Zolkples Embong, berkata pelantikan itu bergantung kepada rundingan di India, minggu depan.
Zolkples berkata, berdasarkan Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Kerja MSN-PHM di Bukit Jalil, Jumaat lalu, peluang mendapatkan pengendali itu nampak positif.
“Roelant jurulatih yang bagus, jadi sudah tentu kita perlu bersaing untuk mendapatkan khidmatnya. Setakat ini, peluang itu nampak positif tapi ia bergantung kepada rundingan pegawai PHM yang akan berlepas ke India.
“Jika gagal, kita akan kekal menggunakan khidmat Stephen (van Huizen) dan (Tai) Beng Hai,” katanya.
Jumaat lalu, Zolkples berkata Oltmans dijangka tiba ke Malaysia sekitar 1 Mei depan iaitu sebelum skuad kebangsaan menghadapi Piala Sultan Azlan Shah di Ipoh, Perak.

Sandeep Singh banged in two penalty corners to help India record their first win in the last four matches against Pakistan before some 19,000 delirious home fans at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
Shivendra Singh and Prabjot Singh chipped in with a goal each as India wiped off memories of a 1-7 humiliation at Pakistan’s hands in the Asian Games final at the same venue in New Delhi in 1982.
India led 4-0 before Sohail Abbas, the world’s only player to score more than 300 international goals, narrowed the margin for Pakistan by converting just one of his six penalty corners.
England’s win in another group B match, highlighted by two goals from James Tindall, was their first over Australia in a World Cup match since the 3-1 scoreline in the 1975 edition in Malaysia.
Australian captain Jamie Dwyer scored twice, including a penalty stroke, but Jason Lee’s European champions played outstanding hockey to rattle their fancied opponents.
Dwyer’s stroke in the 23rd minute put Australia ahead, but England drew level two minutes later through a penalty corner by Ashley Jackson.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two more players from Perak – defender Jagdev Singh, 18, and midfielder Harmit Singh, 17 – have been called up to join the Project 2013 hockey training squad.
Coach K. Dharmaraj said he was impressed with their performances in the age-group tournaments last year.
“Jagdev did well for Anderson School in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) last year and has the ability to play for the Project 2013 squad,” he said.
He added that although Harmit did not feature in the MJHL last year, the student from Anglo Chinese School (ACS) of Ipoh performed well in the National Under-18 tournament.
“He is an up-and-coming player with a lot of talent and I believe he has a chance to lead the midfield,” said Dharmaraj, who is assisted by K. Gobinathan and Nor Azlan Bakar.
“Both of them have joined our training this week and will play in the three friendly matches against Seongju City Hall of South Korea this week.”
Dharmaraj said although he has 35 players in the training squad, he would still need many more as he prepares the team for the Junior World Cup qualifying tournament in 2012.
“We will send players for attachment with foreign clubs every year in a bid to prepare a strong team for the qualifiers,” he said.
“Mohd Noor (Faeez Ibrahim) will be the first player from the Project squad to play for Hatem Club in Division Two of the Dutch League next week.”
The Project squad will also compete in a quadrangular at the Tun Razak Stadium from March 4-7. The other teams in the quadrangular are the national team, Mannheim Hockey Club of Germany and Seongju City Hall.
Dharmaraj said the Project squad would not feature in the Razak Cup in Kuantan on March 24-April 3 “as we do not have any assignments this year”.
The players, he added, would be allowed to play for their respective states in the Razak Cup.

PENGURUS skuad Projek 2013, Mirnawan Nawawi mempertikaikan tindakan pihak pengurusan Sekolah Sukan Bukit Jalil (SSBJ) yang mahukan penuntut Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) lebih menumpukan pelajaran berbanding sukan.
Tujuh pelajar SSBJ memohon menarik diri daripada skuad Projek 2013, minggu lalu hingga menjejaskan tiga lagi pelajar Sekolah Sukan Bandar Penawar (SSBP), yang terpaksa menolak tawaran menuntut di SSBJ berikutan masalah jadual latihan.
Mirnawan berkata kesemua 10 pelajar itu memaklumkan jadual harian penuntut SPM di SSBJ boleh dianggap fokus hampir 100 peratus terhadap pelajaran.
“Mereka memaklumkan kelas tambahan bermula jam 8 hingga 9.30 pagi dan meneruskan sesi persekolahan hingga 2.30 petang. Mereka kemudian mengikuti kelas tambahan hingga jam 6 petang.
“Pada sebelah malam, kelas tambahan akan bermula jam 8.30 hingga 10 malam. Jadi, bagaimana pelajar ini dapat berlatih? “Sepatutnya, pihak pengurusan SSBJ perlu bijak mengimbangi jadual pelajar kerana objektif penubuhannya ialah melahirkan penuntut cemerlang dalam sukan dan pelajaran.
“Saya lihat tindakan ini sudah berat sebelah. Jika hanya mahu fokus kepada pelajaran, apa keistimewaan SSBJ? Lebih baik hantar saja pelajar ke sekolah harian biasa,” katanya.
Kenyataan bekas kapten kebangsaan era 1990-an itu nyata bercanggah dengan slogan SSBJ selaku sekolah sukan pertama negara iaitu ‘SSBJ Penjana Atlit Bertaraf Dunia’.

''Saya bersama Stephen Van Huizen akan membuat penilaian semasa kejohanan itu dalam mengenal pasti pemain yang boleh diketengahkan bersama skuad kebangsaan.
''Mereka yang kecewa tidak dipanggil, mesti mempamerkan prestasi yang cemerlang jika masih berhasrat menyertai skuad kebangsaan.
''Malah senarai 25 pemain yang dipanggil ini masih belum muktamad, sama ada dikekalkan atau digugurkan, semuanya bergantung kepada latihan, tahap disiplin serta kesungguhan mereka,''katanya kepada pemberita di Bukit Jalil, semalam.

KUALA LUMPUR: Midfielder Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim is set to become the first player from the Project 2013 hockey squad to play in a foreign league.
The 20-year-old Project squad skipper will leave for Holland on Friday to play for Hatem Club in the Dutch League.
Project 2013 squad coach K. Dharmaraj said that Faeez would play for 10 weeks for the Division Two club.
“Each team in the Dutch League are only allowed to hire two foreign players and Faeez was lucky enough to be selected to play for Hatem Club,” said Dharmaraj.
“The chance to play in the Dutch League will definitely boost his confidence. He will also get to learn the European style of play.”
Dharmaraj said Faeez was selected by the Dutch club after emerging as top scorer for Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) last year.
Faeez was also voted as the best player in the Razak Cup in Kuala Lumpur last year and named the best player in the South East Asia (SEA) Cup in Bangkok last year.
Dharmaraj said that he was still discussing with other European clubs to take in other Project squad players.
Faeez, who played for UniKL-IBIL in the recently-concluded Malaysia Hockey League (MHL), is delighted to be featuring in the Dutch League.
“I am looking forward to playing in the league to improve my game and to learn the European style of play,” he said.

“Ketika ini bajet kita hanya terhad kepada 25 pemain dan perbincangan menambah jumlah pemain masih dibuat.
“Ada beberapa pemain kebangsaan yang tidak beraksi dalam LHM, termasuk kerana cedera tidak terpilih,” katanya pada hari pertama bersama pemangku ketua jurulatih skuad kebangsaan yang baru dilantik, Stephen van Huizen, semalam.
Bagi Beng Hai yang mendapat mandat mengendali skuad senior pada tahun kedua berturut-turut, dua keutamaan yang diberi perhatian dalam pemilihan ialah pemain muda dan kecergasan fizikal.

KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey team have been told to focus on their main target for the year – the Asian Games – and not compete in too many outings.
The National Sports Council (NSC) said that the team, who started their training programme yesterday, should remember that the main target is to win a gold medal at the Asiad in Guangzhou, China, in November.
The team’s other major assignment is the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.
NSC director for elite programme Ariffin Ghani said yesterday that the team should learn from their 2006 campaign and not spread themselves thin by having two targets within a short time.

The NSC and the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) will meet on Wednesday to discuss the team’s programme for the year.
The 25 players, who began training yesterday, will come under the NSC’s 2010 Asiad-Commonwealth Games Challenge programme, which offers full-time training.
“We must get our priorities right. In 2006, we won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games and then failed in the World Cup qualifiers a month later and the Asian Games as well,” said Ariffin.
“The same players were used for the tournaments and they failed to raise their game. So, learn from it. There is no reason why we cannot keep the core players for the Asian Games and use the younger players for the Commonwealth Games as this will provide useful exposure for the juniors.”
The winners of the Asian Games will also gain automatic berth to the 2012 London Olympics.
Ariffin also said that there was no reason why they could not have more than 25 players in the training squad.
“It is up to the MHF to make the request. By having more players, the MHF can prepare two sides for the two challenges. We’ll leave it to the MHF to decide,” he said.
“It is important for us to focus on the right targets.”
Ariffin also said that since the players were in full-time training, they would stay at Casa One in the Bukit Jalil Complex.

Earlier, the MHF had informed that Dutch club Bloemendaal HC, who had visited Malaysia before, were playing in the quadrangular.
The South Korean side will play eight matches starting tomorrow – five against the national hockey team and three against the Project 2013 squad.
Mannheim HC will play two matches against the seniors and one each against the Project 2013 team and the South Korean side.
The opening matches of the quadrangular will see the national team taking on Seongju City Hall and the Project squad facing the German side.
