Belanda aib Kanada, NZ kejutkan Korea

PENYERANG Korea Selatan, Seo Jong-ho cuba melepasi kawalan dua pemain New Zealand dalam saingan Piala Dunia Kumpulan A di New Delhi, malam tadi. New Zealand menang 2-1.

NEW DELHI: Belanda mengekalkan tempat teratas Kumpulan A selepas membelasah Kanada 6-0 dalam kancah kejohanan hoki Piala Dunia, malam tadi.

- AFP

Gaji jurulatih hoki RM34,000

“Beliau sedia meletak jawatan.

Petua Mirnawan

“Sebenarnya, pemain mampu setidaknya seri menentang Manheim.

Australia set record victory as hosts India and Pakistan fall

NEW DELHI: Australia achieved the biggest win in the history of hockey’s World Cup by hammering South Africa 12-0 while England held off Pakistan 5-2 to stay unbeaten on Thursday.

Olympic silver medallist Spain revived their semi-final chances with a 5-2 victory over hosts India.

England lead Group B with 9 points, Australia and Spain have 6 each, India and Pakistan have 3 each, and South Africa yet to earn a point.

England’s third straight win halfway through their group matches left them in a good position to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since their silver medal at London in 1986, but it came at the cost of defender Richard Mantell, who dislocated his ankle and was out for the rest of the tournament.

“Richard’s our key player and we’re going to miss him. He’s very good in long distribution of the ball,” said England coach Jason Lee.

Captain Barry Middleton and Jonty Clarke scored twice each to lead England’s charge against Pakistan.

Ashley Jackson also scored for England, which blew a 2-0 halftime lead when Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt scored in a four-minute span to draw level.

Middleton broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute.

“I think this is the best we’ve played in this tournament,” Middleton said. “We showed why we are European champions.”

Lee heaped praised on his team for their biggest win over Pakistan.

“It’s a fantastic victory. It was a difficult match but the manner in which we played showed a lot of character from the boys,” Lee said. “They played excellent hockey in a match where emotions ran high.”

Penalty corner specialist Luke Doerner scored four times and Jamie Dwyer three as Australia eclipsed the previous biggest win of 12-3 by Pakistan against New Zealand at Bombay in 1982.

Australia’s previous best World Cup scoreline was 9-0 against Ghana in 1975.

“It’s not every day that we score 12 goals, but I was not aware that it was a record,” Australia coach Ric Charlesworth said.

“I liked the way we played throughout the game, we were relentless.”

Glenn Turner scored twice, while Desmond Abbott, Fergus Kavanagh and Matthew Butturini also made one entry in the scorebook.

Australia took 16 minutes to score then led 5-0 at halftime, and finished with three in the last eight minutes.

Pau Quemada converted two penalty corners as Spain overwhelmed India.

Field goals by Albert Sala and captain Pol Amat gave Spain a 2-0 lead at half-time before Quemada converted two penalty corners and David Alegre capitalised on a penalty corner rebound to give Spain their second win in three matches.

“After the loss to Pakistan, we now have a feeling that we’re in the race for a semi-final place,” Sala said.

Australia ledak 12 gol

LUKE Doerner (tengah) meraikan jaringannya ketika membantu Australia mengalahkan Afrika Selatan 12-0, malam tadi.

NEW DELHI: Pasukan pilihan, Australia merakamkan kemenangan terbesar dalam sejarah kejohanan hoki Piala Dunia selepas membelasah Afrika Selatan 12-0 dalam saingan Kumpulan B, malam tadi.

Juara Eropah, England menewaskan Pakistan 5-2 buat merakamkan kemenangan ketiga berturut-turut dalam kumpulan berkenaan dengan Jonty Clarke dan kapten, Barry Middleton masing-masing menjaringkan dua gol.

Pakar pukulan sudut penalti Australia, Luke Doerner menyumbat empat gol, Jamie Dwyer, tiga manakala Glenn Turner, dua ketika skuad bergelar Kookaburras itu seperti mengajar Afrika Selatan cara bermain hoki.

- AFP

World Cup: Record win for Aussies

NEW DELHI: Favourites Australia thrashed South Africa 12-0 yesterday to record the biggest win in World Cup history as former field hockey giants India and Pakistan took a tumble.
Australia's penalty corner ace Luke Doerner slammed four goals, Jamie Dwyer three and Glenn Turner two as the Kookaburras surpassed Pakistan's 12-3 romp over New Zealand in the 1982 edition in Mumbai.

European champions England continued their unbeaten run with a 5-2 demolition of Pakistan, with Jonty Clarke and captain Barry Middleton scoring two goals apiece.

England, who top group B with nine full points from three matches, need to win one of their two remaining games against India and Spain to qualify for their first World Cup semi-final since 1986.

Beijing Olympic silver-medallists Spain made light of the absence of injured strikers Santi Freixa and Eduard Tubau to silence a boisterous crowd of 19,000 with a 5-2 win over hosts India.

Pau Quemada converted two penalty corners, while Albert Sala, captain Pol Amat and David Alegre chipped in with goals in the key match.
India, who trailed 2-0 at half-time, earned consolation goals from Sandeep Singh and Gurwinder Chandi.

With two rounds of league matches still to be played, Australia and Spain were lying second in the group behind England with six points each.

India and Pakistan trail with three points apiece and need big wins in the remaining games to stay in contention for a place in the semi-finals.

South Africa, the other team in the group, have lost all three matches so far, scoring six goals and conceding 22.

Australian coach Ric Charlesworth was delighted at his team's big win.

"I did not know it was a record, but it is not everyday that we score 12 goals in a match," he said.

"I liked the way we played throughout the match. We were relentless. I am also very pleased with our penalty corner conversions."

England led Pakistan 2-0 at half-time, but the four-time champions hit back after the resumption to draw level with goals from Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt.

Middleton put his side 3-2 ahead in the 53rd minute, before Clarke and Middleton scored twice in three minutes to put the game out of Pakistan's reach.

England, however, suffered a blow as defender Richard Mantell was ruled out of the rest of the tournament after he dislocated an ankle in the second half.

Middleton said it was his side's best match in the tournament so far.

"We showed how good we are and played like the European champions we are," the skipper said.

"The boys displayed a lot of character to take the game away from Pakistan." India's Spanish coach Jose Brasa conceded the hosts were virtually out of the semi-finals, but wanted his team to finish among the top six.

"It's very disappointing to lose a crucial match, but we committed childish mistakes in the defence and up front," said Brasa.

"The game turned Spain's way when we conceded the second goal with just seconds to go for half-time." Spain's goal-scorer Sala was confident his team can advance to the knock-out rounds.

"We have a very good chance now," he said. "We are finding form at the right time." -- AFP

Now, Nor Hizzat gets to play in Dutch League

KUALA LUMPUR: Nor Hizzat Su mantri will be the second Project 2013 squad player to feature in the Dutch Hockey League.

The 18-year-old Kuala Lumpur forward will join team-mate and midfielder Mohd Noor Faeez Ibrahim at the Hatem Club. Faeez was the first player from the Project squad to be invited to play in the Dutch League. He left for Holland last month.

Project 2013 squad coach K. Dharmaraj said that Hizzat and Faeez would play in 10 league matches in the next 10 weeks.

“Each Dutch club is allowed to hire two foreign players. Faeez and a South African forward were invited to feature in the Dutch League.

“However, the South African player’s hopes of playing in the league did not materialise because of visa problems,” said Dharmaraj.

“So, the Dutch club have invited Hizzat to replace the South African. Both Faeez and Hizzat will benefit from playing in the Dutch League,” said Dharmaraj.

Both Faeez and Hizzat played for UniKL-IBIL in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) last month.

For Dharmaraj, he wants to send at least three more of his Project squad players to play in Europe this year to gain experience.

“We want not only to qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup but also to put up a strong challenge in the Finals,” said Dharmaraj.

Hizzat, who featured in the Under-18 Asia Cup in Myanmar last November, said that he was delighted to get a chance to play in the Dutch League.

“This is the first time I am playing in a foreign league. My target is to score as many goals as possible in the 10 league matches,” said Hizzat.

Ujian sulung tanpa tiga tonggak

UJIAN sulung selaku pemangku ketua jurulatih hoki kebangsaan mengundang debaran buat Stephen van Huizen apabila berisiko hilang khidmat tiga tonggak menjelang aksi pembukaan Kejohanan Persahabatan Empat Penjuru, hari ini.

Australia lega benam India

- AFP

Korea, Jerman lakar kemenangan

PEMAIN Korea Selatan menyambut gol kemenangan menewaskan Argentina 2-1 dalam perlawanan Kumpulan A, malam tadi.

NEW DELHI: Korea Selatan bangkit menewaskan Argentina 2-1 dengan jaringan kemenangan menyusul pada minit terakhir perlawanan Kumpulan A, kejohanan hoki Piala Dunia 2010, malam tadi.

- AFP

Holland blast three past NZ, Germany go on rampage

NEW DELHI: Holland took a clear lead in Group A of the men’s hockey World Cup with a 3-1 win over New Zealand yesterday.

All four goals came in the first half after New Zealand captain Phillip Burrows had put his team ahead in the opening minute of the game.

Ronald Brouwer drew level immediately in the second minute, Taeke Taekema scored a penalty corner in the seventh, before Jeroen Hertzberger completed the tally in the 27th.

The Dutch moved to six points from two matches as defending champions Germany and Asia’s number one South Korea went to second place with four points each following their first wins in the tournament.

New Zealand, who had defeated Canada in their opening match, are on three points.

The Germans, seeking a hat-trick of World Cup titles, came back strongly after a 2-2 draw against the Koreans to trounce Canada 6-0.

It was their biggest World Cup win since the 7-0 romp over India in the 1978 edition in Argentina while playing as the West German team.

South Korea clinched a 2-1 win over Argentina with Nam Hyun-woo converting a last-minute penalty corner.

Germany, the reigning Olympic champions, pumped in four goals in the first half, three of them with penalty corners after Benjamin Wess had put them ahead in the 3rd minute with a field goal.

Jan-Marco Montag, Max Muller and Martin Haner fired in set-piece goals, before man-of-the-match Florian Fuchs sealed the emphatic win by striking twice in the second session.

Germany won the last two World Cups in 2002 and 2006 before underlining their supremacy with a gold at the Beijing Olympics two years ago.

The 11th-ranked Canada remain without a point.

“We analysed our first game to draw up a things-to-do list,” said German coach Markus Weise. “I am glad some of those negatives have been ticked off.

“We you are not playing a top side, you look to score five to six goals, and we were able to achieve that today.”

South Korea and Argentina produced a barren first half as both sides wasted scoring opportunities, including two penalty corners by the Asian team.

Argentina took the lead in the 53rd minute through Facundo Callioni after the Koreans were reduced to 10 men following a green card to Kyung Min-jun.

Lee Nam-yong drew level eight minutes later and Hyun-Woo slammed the last-minute winner when South Korea were awarded a penalty corner by the video umpire.

Argentina have lost both matches so far.

Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel said the win over New Zealand was satisfying.

“We are on the right path,” he said. “We played better than in the last game and it was nice to see the boys fighting back after the early goal.

“The whole team is taking turns to make a mark and that augurs well for the rest of the tournament.”

In the next round of group A matches tomorrow, South Korea take on New Zealand, Holland meet Canada and Germany clash with Argentina. — AFP

World Cup Qualifier in the balance

THE Malaysian Women's Hockey Federation (MWHF) hopes that the World Cup Qualifier will be played as scheduled in Chile although the country was hit by a devastating earthquake just days ago.
Malaysia are supposed to play in the Chile qualifier on April 24-May 2 which also involves the hosts, Australia, Ireland, Scotland and Trinidad and Tobago. "We are scheduled to depart for Chile on April 17 but with the current situation I am not sure if the tournament will be held there.

I have contacted the FIH (International Hockey Federation) regarding the matter and they are looking into it," said MWHF secretary S.

Shamala. FIH competitions manager Dennis Meredith said in an e-mail y to MWHA: "We have received a communication yesterday from the Chilean Hockey Federation about the problems.

At this stage it is hoped we will proceed with the tournament as planned but we need a couple of days to check to ensure everything will be in place. "All teams will be advised as soon as we are able to confirm all the arrangements."

World Cup: England on top

NEW DELHI: England recorded their second successive win in the men's World Cup yesterday as Australia and Pakistan joined the race for semi-final berths from group B.
England defeated South Africa 6-4 in a high-scoring thriller, while Australia and Pakistan bagged their first points in the tournament after losing their opening matches.

Abdul Haseem scored once in each half as Pakistan, stung by the 1-4 defeat to arch-rivals India on Sunday, recovered to beat Olympic silver-medallists Spain 2-1.

Pre-tournament favourites Australia brushed aside the 2-3 loss to England as they swept aside India 5-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,000 at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

The Kookaburras, watched from the stands by visiting Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith, ran up a 3-0 lead by the 26th minute and pumped in two more goals despite Jamie Dwyer missing a penalty stroke.

England emerged group B leaders with six points from two matches, while Australia, India, Pakistan and Spain were lying in second spot with three points each.
Two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

European champions England edged past the South Africans in a game where both sides suffered defensive lapses.

Richard Mantell scored two penalty corners, while Rob Moore, Ashley Jackson, Nick Catlin and Iain Mackay chipped in with a goal each for England.

Marvin Harper scored twice for South Africa, and Lloyd Norris-Jones and Thornton McDade netted one each.

It was the first time in World Cup history that England pumped in six goals in a single match. They had scored five against Pakistan in 1998, but still lost the match as their rivals netted seven.

"Scoring six goals means a lot and I am happy with the win, but we were not consistent enough," said England captain Barry Middleton.

Australia's Dwyer said beating India was "a relief" after losing to England.

"It was good to play the way we normally play," the striker said. "I think we played brilliant hockey in the first 20 minutes. It was important to score early goals."

India's Spanish coach Jose Brasa admitted Australia deserved to win.

"They were in a different league as far as fitness and speed were concerned," said Brasa. -- AFP

Faeez pemain termuda sertai Liga Hoki Belanda

Hatrik Taekema benam Argentina

“Bagaimanapun kami perlu meningkatkan ketepatan sudut penalti.

Skuad wanita hadapi tugas getir

- Bernama

Pakistan down Spain to stay on track for the semi-finals

NEW DELHI: England recorded their second successive win in the men’s field hockey World Cup yesterday as Australia and Pakistan joined the race for semi-final berths from Group B.

England defeated South Africa 6-4 in a high-scoring thriller, while Australia and Pakistan bagged their first points in the tournament after losing their opening matches.

Abdul Haseem scored once in each half as Pakistan, stung by the 1-4 defeat to arch-rivals India on Sunday, recovered to beat Olympic silver medallists Spain 2-1.

“Scoring six goals means a lot and I am happy with the win, but we were not consistent enough,” said England captain Barry Middleton.

“We should have played well throughout the 70 minutes, but we did not do that. Our defence was not up to the mark.

“We have a tough game against Pakistan on Thursday and really need to work on our game,” he added.

Pakistan led 1-0 at half-time through a goal by Haseem, before David Alegre drew level for Spain in the 65th minute after the goal was referred to the video umpire.

Pakistan earned their first penalty corner two minutes before the final whistle and veteran Sohail Abbas’ shot was deflected into the goal by Haseem for the winner.

“The World Cup started for us today,” said Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan. “I hope this is going to be the turning point for us in this tournament. We played to a plan and it worked.”

Australia’s Dwyer said beating India was “a relief” after losing to England.

“It was good to play the way we normally play,” the striker said. “I think we played brilliant hockey in the first 20 minutes. It was important to score early goals.”

India’s Spanish coach Jose Brasa admitted Australia deserved to win.

“They were in a different league as far as fitness and speed were concerned,” said Brasa. “We also conceded at least two goals due to stupid faults.” — AFP

India cemerlang kekang Pakistan

NEW DELHI: India berjaya mengecewakan musuh ketatnya, Pakistan 4-1 dalam kejohanan hoki Piala Dunia kelmarin ketika England mengecewakan pasukan pilihan, Australia 3-2 menerusi aksi hari pembukaan cukup dramatik.

“Sukar bangkit selepas ketinggalan 3-0,” katanya. “Pasukan India bermain baik. Semua pemain cukup kecewa tapi kami tidak patah semangat.” - AFP

PHM tinjau calon lain

FIH ban India’s Shivendra for hitting Pakistan’s Fareed

NEW DELHI: India striker Shivendra Singh was yesterday banned for three matches and Pakistan’s Irfan Muhammad for one game for different violations in the men’s hockey World Cup.

Shivendra was handed the suspension by tournament director Ken Read for hitting Pakistan’s Fareed Ahmed above the eye in Sunday’s Group B clash between the Asian rivals.

Read penalised Irfan for wearing an unapproved glove and knee pad to defend the first penalty corner in the same match, a statement from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) said.

Shivendra will miss India’s key Group B matches against Australia, Spain and England, but will be available for the last game against South Africa.

Irfan will sit out of Pakistan’s match against Spain today.

Shivendra, who scored a goal in India’s em phatic 4-1 win on Monday, was charged under a level 2 offence of FIH’s code of conduct which deals with physical assault without causing serious injury.

Read said he handed the three-match suspension after video replays suggested that Shivendra had hit Fareed deliberately, even though the on-field umpires did not penalise the player during the match.

Pakistan’s Irfan was suspended following manager Asif Bajwa’s admission that the offending glove and knee padjavascript:void(0) were not taken to the technical committee for approval before the tournament.

Defending champions Germany come from behind to draw with Koreans

NEW DELHI: Two-time defending champions Germany came from behind to force a 2-2 draw on South Korea in the men’s hockey World Cup yesterday.

Dutch penalty corner ace Taeke Taekema slammed the first hat-trick of the tournament to help his team crush Argentina 3-0 at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi

In another group A match, New Zealand came back from a 1-2 deficit at half-time to defeat Canada 3-2, with Ryan Archibald scoring the winner four minutes before the final whistle.

The Koreans led 2-0 at half-time, a margin the powerful Germans had not endured at the interval of a World Cup match since trailing 0-4 against Australia in Sydney in 1994.

But the reigning Olympic champions who are looking for a hat-trick of World Cup titles after winning the last two editions in 2002 and 2006, fought back strongly after resumption.

Florian Fuchs narrowed the margin in the 50th minute with a goal that was referred to the video umpire, before Benjamin Wess scored the equaliser off a goal-mouth melee eight minutes later.

The Germans were lucky to escape with a point in the opening match of group A, which also includes the Netherlands, Argentina, New Zealand and Canada.

Two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals.

Hyun Hye-Sung put the Asian champions ahead in the fourth minute with a stinging penalty corner shot, before Lee Nam Yong produced a brilliant second goal in the 15th minute.

Taking a pass from the centre, Lee sped down the left flank and hit a reverse stick from the narrowest of angles that caught German goalkeeper Max Weinhold on the wrong foot and went in.

“I am must admit we were lucky to draw,” said German captain Max Muller.

“But I am also happy we were able to fight back in the second-half and create chances.

“We need to improve our penalty corner conversions. We wasted six today. Just can’t afford to do it in our remaining games.

“The South Koreans were fast on their counter-attacks like always, but we always knew that. They did not play any better today, it’s just that we were not at our best.”

“We played the first half well, but Germany came back hard in the second half,” South Korea coach Shin Seok-kyo said.

Taekema’s hat-trick against Argentina took his World Cup tally to 16, just one short of another Dutch penalty corner specialist Floris Jan-Bovelander.

“A good start, of course,” said Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel.

“Taeke is obviously a very important player for us and it is good to have him in such form.

“This is only the first match and we are settling down well.”

Canada, ranked 11th in the world, took an early lead against the number eight Kiwis when Mark Pearson scored off a rebound in the second minute.

Priyesh Bhana drew level in the 11th, but the Canadians nudged ahead a second time in the 20th through a field goal by Philip Wright.

New Zealand attacked after the resumption and were rewarded with the equaliser by Nick Haig in the 46th minute, before Archibald found the winner from the top of the circle. — AFP
